Ashes

dis wed marks the start of lent, ash wednesday. a time for reflection and renewal. a time to think about our mortality n enjoy what’s good in life, cos life is short. won’t b able to go for mass on tues night or wed morning dis year, cos 99% chance i won’t get to book out or have any nights off. recent posts haf been veri religious, partly cos i’ve been talking to frank, a bunkmate whose a very religious modern christian. its made me realize dat theres much dat catholicism can embrace in the modern expressions of christian faith. its very difficult to reconcile tradition with modern culture cos we are talking about radically different approaches to encountering christianity. but to me at least, a glimpse of wad lies outside the catholic walls have been a very fruitful n insightful experience. n i’ve encountered a spiritual renewal in my own catholic faith.

We rise again from ashes, from the good we’ve failed to do.
We rise again from ashes, to create ourselves anew.
If all the world is ashes, then must our lives be true,
An offering of ashes, an offering to you.

We offer you our failures, we offer you attempts,
The gifts not fully given, the dreams not fully dreamt.
Give our stumblings direction, give our visions wider view,
An offering of ashes an offering to you.

Then rise again from ashes, let healing come to pain,
Though spring has turned to winter, and sunshine turned to rain.
The rain we’ll use for growing, create the world anew
From an offering of ashes, an offering to you.
